After an event is shown, the player chooses the teammate they want to use to represent their team.

The player that wins gets to use their colored card, which can either help their team, or hurt the other, while the loser is eliminated. In team events, the color card will be that of the first selected character. After a card is used, it is replace by a new one. Mario and Sonic act as their team's respective captains and can be selected at any time. If the player wins as their captain, they can choose any color card to use as well as revive two eliminated teammates, but if they lose as the captain, their team automatically loses Heroes Showdown.

When a row only has one character remaining, that character will automatically be granted a fired up status. When a team has four or less characters remaining, the team gets special chance cards to aid them. These chance cards are:.
